11/14/07What would have been the worst aspect of life during the European middle ages? Terrible personal hygiene? No. sickness and food shortage? Hardly. The worst thing about medieval life was the unwavering evil of the Christian "justice" system and the tools of torture they employed.
During the middle Ages, torture was a very common way to punish offenders. Following are the most common torture devices used during the middle Ages.
Many countries in the past have used torture to punish people who have committed a sin or a crime for interrogation before judgement but sometimes the accused are sentenced to death would be tortured prior to execution just to have a last chance to disclose the names of their accomplices.
Torturous interrogations were generally conducted in secret, inside underground dungeons. By contrast, torturous executions were typically public, and woodcuts of English prisoners being hanged, drawn, and quartered show large crowds of spectators, as do paintings of Spanish auto-da-fé executions, in which heretics were burned at the stake.
